The directory '/HIST/' contains the historical data and normal

data for atmospheric circulation fields and so on.

The directory '/HIST/' contains 6 subdirectories for 6 elements,

'/OLR/' for outgoing long wave radiation,

'/PSEA/' for sea surfase pressure,

'/SST/' for sea surfase temperature,

'/T850/' for 850hPa temperature,

'/Z100/' for 100hPa height and

'/Z500/' for 500hPa height.

Each file name consists of 8 characters, and each character

obeys the following rules.

1st-2nd character (element)

'OL' --> outgoing long wave radeation (W/m2)

'PS' --> sea surfase pressure (hPa)

'ST' --> sea surfase temperature (C)

'T8' --> 850hPa temperature C)

'Z1' --> 100hPa height m)

'Z5' --> 500hPa height (m)

3rd characters (kind of data)

'N' --> normal data

'Y' --> historical data

4th-5th characters(year)

These characters indicate the year of the data for

the historical data and the last year of the period from which

we calculate the normal data.

For normal data, if they are 90, we calculate the data

from 30 years of 1961-90 except following elements. Base period

for normal is 1963-1990 and 1979-1996 for 100hPa height and OLR

respectively.

6th character (mean period)

'M' --> monthly mean

7th-8th characters (month number)

month number('01'-'12')

In each file data start at line 3.

The data for sea surface pressure, 850hPa temperature, 100hPa

height and 500hPa height are on 5X5?latitude-longitude grid.

Latitude : 19 points (90.0N, 85.0N, ... ,0.0N)

Longitude : 72 points (0.0, 5.0E, ... ,5.0W)

There are 19 data blocks from the North Pole(the 1st block)

to the equater(the 19th block). Each block contains 8(lines)x9(rows)

data from 0E to 5W. Data for the 1st block(the North Pole) contain

the same values.

(PSEA, T850, Z100, Z500) are NMC from 1963 to 1973 and JMA

for the other years. 

The data for Outgoing Longwave Radiation are on 2.5X2.5?

latitude-longitude grid.
